Abstract:
Acne vulgaris is a common dermatological condition that affects the pilosebaceous units and has multiple underlying causes. Acne vulgaris, also known as Buthūr Labaniyya in Unani, causes white lesions on the face, nose, and cheeks that release cheesy material when squeezed. In conventional medicine, mild cases can be treated with topical regimens, while severe cases require systemic medications. Topical therapies include retinoids (retinoic acid, adapalene, isotretinoin, tazarotene), benzoyl peroxide, clindamycin, erythromycin, and azelaic acid. Systemic drugs include antibiotics (Doxycycline, minocycline, erythromycin, azithromycin). This article aims to provide a thorough and reader friendly review of acne vulgaris from the Unani perspective, while also discussing the treatment approaches described in both classical texts and modern studies. It explores traditional as well as contemporary therapeutic methods to better understand which strategies are most effective in managing acne. The review describes about various Unani formulations and treatment regimens. By blending classical Unani principles with modern clinical insights, the article seeks to suggest practical and evidence supported approaches for improving acne management.
