Effect of compound Unani formulation for the treatment of constipation (Qabd): A case report

Abstract:
Background: In India, constipation is a major public health concern that affects 16% to 37% of individuals. In the general population, self-reported constipation rates range from 24% to 37%, while women reported constipation rates higher than males. About 50 percent elderly living in the institutes report constipation, and about 74% of them regularly take laxatives.
The Perspective of Unani medicine, based on the traditional literature of Unani, contains several compound formulations for the treatment of constipation in Unani medicine, a traditional medicine system in South Asia.

Case description: A 38-year-old woman who had no underlying medical issues arrived at CRU Goa's general medicine OPD complaining of constipation.
Investigations: Thyroid profile, electrolyte balance, lipid profile, cortisol level, CBC, LFT, KFT, RBS, and HbA1c were all normal, confirming unexplained constipation.
Treatment: The patient received Qur Mulayyin, Itrifal Zamani, and Safuf-i-Hazim, a formulation of Unani compounds. Itrifal Zamani 10g morning and night, Qurs Mulayyin 2 tablets at night, and Safuf-i-Hazim 7g before bed with lukewarm water for a week.
As a result of the compound formulation's laxative and purgative qualities, which improved intestinal motility and promoted the formation of bulk stools, the patient reported relief from constipation during treatment.
