Impact of defective nutrition on menstrual health: focus on menorrhagia: A holistic approach

Abstract:
Menorrhagia denotes cyclic regular bleeding which is excessive in amount or duration. A normal menstrual blood loss is 50 to 80 ml. In menorrhagia, menses lasting longer than 7 days or exceeding 80 mL of blood loss. Menorrhagia affects 10 to 30 percent of reproductive-aged women and up to 50 percent of perimenopausal women. It may be poor uterine tone which is usually due to nutritional deficiency of essential Vitamins and minerals, have proven to exert a great influence on the reproductive health in woman and girls. Uncompensated deficit in certain substances cause not only functional but also metabolic disturbances. In Unani literature it is also termed as Kasrat-e-tams, Haiz ki kasrat. According to Tibb-e-unani the human body is considered to be composed of seven natural principal of body Known as Al-Umur-Al-Tabiya. These factors are responsible for maintenance of health. In addition to Al-Umur-Al-Tabiya the Asbab-e-Sith-e-Zarooriya (six essential causes), (Atmospheric Air, Food and drinks, Physical or bodily movement and response, mental or psychic movement and responses, Sleep and wakefulness and retention) are also consider which influences the human body to prevent the disease. Disturbances to any one of these can lead to disease. With rising awareness of the limitations of conventional treatments and their side effects, there has been a noticeable shift in public preference towards traditional and holistic systems like Unani medicine. Unani offers a personalized and natural approach, addressing not just the symptoms but the root cause of disorders such as menorrhagia. Through the regulation of diet, lifestyle, and temperament, and by restoring balance in the body's natural elements, Unani medicine provides effective, time-tested solutions for menstrual disorders. As a result, more people are now returning to this ancient system of healing for safer, sustainable, and integrative care.
