Abstract:
This study aimed to assess the perception of Unani medicine use among undergraduate students at Hamdard University Bangladesh. A total of 120 students were selected using a stratified random sampling technique, considering different faculties as distinct strata. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews using a structured questionnaire, and the analysis was conducted using frequency distribution, percentages, and graphical representations. The findings revealed that, majority 45% of the respondents were between 20-22 years, among them 61% male and 39% female and 46% live at home with others family members. About 48% of respondents became aware of Unani medicine through media, while 56% reported personal usage. Additionally, 48% believed Unani medicine originates from natural sources and 41% had used syrup formulations, with 53% finding them particularly effective. A significant portion (65%) did not consult a doctor before using Unani medicine and 33% strongly disagreed with the notion that Unani medicine could interact with other drugs, while 35% strongly agreed that it is risk-free. Moreover, 43% obtained Unani medicine from pharmacies and 34% strongly agreed that combining Unani and conventional therapy enhances effectiveness. Furthermore, 43% used Unani medicine for disease treatment. Awareness regarding legal regulations was high, with 77% acknowledging the existing policies on herbal medicine use and 60% supporting similar regulations for Unani medicine as conventional drugs, whereas 40% opposed this approach. The increasing use of Unani medicine underscores the need for its wider availability across the country, necessitating regulatory measures to ensure accessibility and safe usage.
