Abstract: Unani medicine is a traditional system of medicine based on Hippocrates' humoral theory. A variety of regimens are used for the purpose of treatment. Depression is a prevalent mental illness that is typified by a lack of interest in once-enjoyed activities and a continuous sense of despair, along with an inability to carry out daily tasks for at least two weeks. According to WHO report, depression is the fourth leading causes of disability worldwide with a prevalence of approximately 5% in general population. The Unani physicians have delineated this disease under the topic of Nafsiyati awamil. In traditional Unani medical literature, depression is described as Malenkholiya (melancholia). Ghair Tabayi Sauda, or abnormal black bile, is regarded by Unani doctors as the root cause and foundation of mental and psychic illnesses. According to the Unani medical system, a person's mizaj, or temperament, is a critical risk factor for a number of illnesses, including mental illnesses like depression. There are numerous effective regimens in the Unani medical system that can be used to treat depression.
