Abstract:
Hemorrhagic ovarian cysts are small blood-filled sacs formed in the ovary. As a result of ovulation, a fluid-filled sac known as an ovarian cyst can form in one or both ovaries and is called a functional ovarian cyst. These cysts are harmless and cause little to no discomfort. When internal bleeding occurs into functional cysts of the ovary it is called a haemorrhagic ovarian cyst. These cysts often form during the luteal or follicular stages of the menstrual cycle. Women with hemorrhagic ovarian cysts may experience no symptoms or may have severe abdominal pain and discomfort. Hemorrhagic cysts are usually not dangerous and do not result in complications when treated appropriately. In Unani literature, Waseem Ahmad Azmi describes a hemorrhagic ovarian cyst under Istesqa-e- Khusiyaturreham in his book Amraz-e-Niswan. A hemorrhagic ovarian cyst is considered a disease occurring due to Fasad-e-Dam and over ascendance of Balgham and can be treated with Unani drugs having Mohalill-e-Awram, Moaddil-e-Dam, and Nafae Sudda-e-Har properties. Ibn Sina mentioned in his book Al-Qanoon that cyst (Keesa) occurs due to abnormal phlegm which may be bloody and honey-like viscoid. Unani medicine claims to possess several single and compound drugs that can be successfully used to resolve the cyst and prevent surgical intervention. Unani medicine plays an important role in the treatment of such hemorrhagic ovarian cysts of the ovary. This paper is written based on the clinical experience of a hemorrhagic ovarian cyst patient treated at the outpatient department of gynecology at Tonk, Rajasthan, and getting promising results. Hemorrhagic ovarian cysts can be diagnosed through ultrasound. A transvaginal ultrasound can help identify the cyst's type, size, shape, and location. If the cyst is small and not causing symptoms, treatment is not likely necessary. But if it is larger cysts, and causes more intense pain, it requires treatment or even surgical removal in some cases.
